5 Laments for the Childless This Mother's Day

My friend, Elisa, still tears up after thirty-five years when she recalls nearly two decades of living on the knife’s edge of emptiness and desire for a child. Each month, a bud of hope that flourished was crushed under the heel of her menstrual cycle. Guilt wracked her mind and heart at the frustration, anger, and envy she felt when her friends announced their pregnancies. She struggled to come up with an adequate defense against the accusing finger of her failure to reproduce.“What’s wrong with me?” she cried out to God. “Why won’t you give me a child? Don’t you love me?” Her laments joined prominent women of the Bible and countless others who have endured the affliction of the label “barren.”The inability to have children is a terrible effect of sin passed to every generation from Adam and Eve. Knowing this truth doesn’t stop the childless woman from asking, “Why me?”Hannah, whose story we find in First Samuel, may have wondered the same thing. She lamented her childless state for years. “Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the Lord” (1 Samuel 1:10 NLT).Like Hannah, the childless woman today has no easy answers. Sometimes, the best we can do in our anguish is wail and pray. If you’re childless today, remember El Roi, God Who Sees, has His eye on you. He hears your laments—pages of the Word overflow with compassion for His beloved daughter whose life has been tainted by childlessness.Your loving Father wrote messages in His Word to soothe your laments. Personalize the following fifteen verses to cry out to Him today and receive His comfort.Five Laments for the Childless Woman:Photo credit: ©GettyImages/Rawpixel

10 Attributes of God to Inspire and Encourage Moms

Motherhood is one of the most beautiful gifts God created. It’s the gift of life and love. As a mother of five, some by birth and some through adoption, I know well the depth of a mother’s love. With motherhood comes a heart that holds both the good and the difficult moments of being a mom. There are moments when pride soars higher than it ever has as a mom sees her child reach milestones and succeed. Then there are moments that hurt deeper than ever before. When a mother watches her child hurt, she hurts too. It can sometimes feel like the child is an extension of herself, and in some ways that is exactly what motherhood is. With all the ups and downs, there is a great need for a mom to be encouraged and seen. The simple, “I love you, mommy,” or “Thanks, mom,” goes far to help her move from feeling invisible to loved. To celebrate the great blessing a mother is, we will unpack a few attributes of God that can encourage any mom. Whether she’s living her best life and feeling like this is the greatest season she’s had, or if she’s struggling to find her footing and purpose, allow these truths to be a balm to soothe the soul of all the moms, from expectant moms to grandmoms. Share it with a mom that you love and let her know she is seen and known by you and by our mighty God.Photo credit: ©Getty Images/Stígur Már Karlsson /Heimsmyndir

10 Biblical Truths for the Mom Who Doubts Herself

Motherhood. Just the word evokes feelings within a mom’s heart. No matter how new or old the title mother is, it’s a weight and a crown that can’t really be compared to anything else. From the very first time I realized I might become a mother, I started trying to learn everything I could about pregnancy, newborns, and the process of being a mom. Now that I’ve been into it for over twenty years, I still have moments when I don’t know if I’m doing it right. As a mom of five, I’m continuing to learn and grow. There are seasons that are unexplainably filled with joy. Then there are seasons when the difficulty can’t even be put into words. Motherhood dives into a part of a woman’s heart that is tender and deeply personal. But it takes one scroll through social media to start doubting every victory I’ve ever had as a mom. Am I enough? Did I do too much? Did I mess them up? Am I making the right choice? Should I have said yes? Or no?The doubts a mother carries are deep. God gives moms sweet reminders in His Word, and together, we are going to unpack just a few words of encouragement for moms that will help you relax when the doubts start creeping in.Photo credit: ©Getty Images/Kaan-Sezer

Mother's Day for Those with Unloving Mothers

Each Mother’s Day, I wrestle with conflicting emotions. As a mom, I love to celebrate the gift God gave me in my daughter and the special moments we spend together. The cards she writes sweet messages in. Hand-made gifts. Family dinners filled with laughter as we reflect upon previous years. But as a daughter who has lived most of her life disconnected from her mom, this annual tradition feels confusing and hard. I’ve spent hours standing in the greeting card aisle, searching for that perfect card. One that feels honest, authentic, and honoring. To avoid inflicting pain, I felt I had to send something. But all those nostalgic poems commemorating memories and heart-felt impact didn’t feel true. And so, I’d select something funny and light, add a blessing for a special, sun-filled day, and send it off, grieving the relationship I’ve never had and likely never would.Working with women across the globe, listening to their struggles, stories, and hurts, I’ve come to realize I’m not alone. Many people are hurting deeply and feeling conflicted regarding how to respond in love, grace, and truth. This can be even more confusing for those connected with a faith community where reconciliation, restoration, and sacrificial love is emphasized. But love doesn’t mean ignoring or accepting sin, poor behavior, and dysfunction. Love and truth must always coexist. The challenge, then, is finding where love and truth intersect and how to experience personal healing in the process.Photo Credit: © Getty Images/Light Field Studios

20 Bible Verses That Honor the Blessing of Mothers

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to draw our attention to our mothers (and mother-figures!) and the important role they have played and continue to play in our lives. We admire our mothers and mother figures for their nurturing, their strength, their kindness, their sacrifice, and perhaps their sense of humor and their special hugs.Mothers are essential to our care growing up, but a relationship with your mother is such a blessing in your adult years as well. My mother and I have a long-distance relationship, but that hasn’t stopped us from chatting about the things we both enjoy, many of which she has inspired me to love as well, such as gardening, decorating, and cooking.God’s word has a lot to say about the blessing mothers bring to our lives. Here are 20 Bible verses that honor mothers:Photo Credit: © Getty Images/Halfpoint
