4 Dangers of Condemning Worship Styles We Don’t Like

The Bible speaks of the dangers of putting ourselves and our preferences over others, and even though we might believe we’ve got a good spiritual reason for liking or disliking a certain form of worship, God’s Word gives us reasons not to condemn something that is ultimately for Him. Here are four dangers of condemning worship styles we don’t like.

7 Ways to Be Fully Present in Church Worship

The Bible instructs us about the need to gather as the family of God (Hebrews 10:25). When we do, we encourage one another through the Word of God (1 Timothy 4:13) and teach one another through praise and worship—hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19).We know we should prioritize this, yet in our busy lives, it can be difficult to engage fully. Jobs keep us busy and overwhelmed, and families bring drama and crises. Engaging in corporate worship seems boring compared to other entertainment or "fun" events. As with any part of walking with God, we must be intentional and disciplined about the things that are important. God acts with purpose from truth, and he leads us to do the same. We go to church not because it's fun in the immediate but because of the good it does us in the long term, both in this life and the next. Here are seven ways to be fully present in church worship.Photo credit: ©Getty Images/People Images

10 Ways the Psalms Lead Us to Deeper Worship

When you want to deepen your relationship with God, you need to move beyond simply knowing about Him and seek personal encounters with Him. The Bible’s Psalms can help you do that. The Psalms are full of honest expressions of what it means to relate to God. They describe faith in action while dealing with the tension between this fallen world’s realities and the hope God offers you. Here’s how you can deepen your relationship with God by reading and responding to the Psalms:Photo Credit: ©GettyImages/Sergio Yoneda

The One Thing I Wish Worship Teams Would Stop Doing

So many worship teams have fallen into this pattern of two fast songs followed by two slow songs. This has made the worship segment in church become very predictable. Where do these formulas come from and better yet, are these formulas killing our ability to depend on and be led by the Holy Spirit?

9 Worship Songs and Hymns to Help Us Ring in Spring

Spring is one of my favorite seasons. Spring is about the return of color in New England and beyond. The trees are brown all winter because the beautiful fall foliage has long since fallen to the ground. Except for the snow, which makes everything picturesque again, during winter you see a lot of brown trees. However, spring brings the budding of new leaves and the pleasant sound of chirping birds. These sounds and colors of spring reflect the promise of new life. Hearing and seeing this tells you the dark, bitter days of winter will soon be gone and replaced with the bright, colorful, and hopeful days of spring.Spring is also the time of year we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, which is the greatest hope of life we all have. There is no better way to celebrate hope and life than with singing. To encourage you, I put together a list of worship songs and hymns that would match the optimism and hope that come with the arrival of spring. As you think about the songs I share (and hopefully sing), I pray they will remind you of God’s love, plan, and eternal hope in Jesus Christ. These are among my favorites, and I hope they may also become some of your favorites.Photo Credit: ©Getty Images/WillSelarep

4 Important Biblical Themes Found in Both Old and New Worship Songs

Of all the important insights we can take from the amount of music in the book of Revelation, one of the most significant realizations that has implications for us now is that worship in heaven includes both old and new songs. If we are going to be singing old and new songs for eternity, let’s explore some important Biblical themes in both old and new songs.

Throughout the ages, music has been used as a powerful tool to celebrate Christ's resurrection. Some seasonal hymns and songs are so potent that they make the worshiper feel as if they’ve had church by the time the last stanza is sung. These songs are sacred.Any song with relatable lyrics and compelling music has the power to reach our emotions.
