4 Lessons from the Characters of Pentecost

Pentecost, Greek for "fifty," is on the Christian calendar to remember what God brought about in Acts Chapter 2. Luke, the author of Acts, depicts the remarkable events of this pivotal experience. From it, we, too, can glean wisdom and encouragement. Pentecost is not a singular event, nor is it a single day on the Church calendar—it serves as a constant reminder to us that the Lord makes His home in our hearts when we accept Him as Savior.DALL.E 2024 via ChatGPT AI Technology

4 Ways Modern Christians Can Find Meaning in Pentecost

When most people think of Pentecost, they think of the second chapter in the book of Acts when followers of Jesus were gathered in an upper room. The Holy Spirit showed up as a mighty rushing wind, the flames of fire appeared over the heads of those in that room, and they began to speak in languages they never learned. Pentecost had its roots in an Old Testament feast day called Feast of Weeks. The word Pentecost comes from a Greek word that means "fifty," and Pentecost takes place fifty days after the holiday prior to it, Passover. When the Lord initially instituted this feast, it was connected to harvest festivals, which had the focus of expressing gratitude to God for delivering the Israelites out of Egypt and giving them their own land, according to Jews for Jesus. There are many ways modern Christians can still find meaning in Pentecost today -- here are 4 of them. Photo Credit: ©iStock/Getty Images Plus/middelveld

4 Ways to Live in the Power of Pentecost Every Day

Perhaps one of the most exciting events recorded in the Bible is when the day of Pentecost occurred in the second chapter of Acts. What an amazing experience it must have been to be sitting in the upper room when the wind of the Holy Spirit arrived, see the visual of what looked like tongues of fire over people’s heads, hear people suddenly speaking in a language they never learned, and watch 3000 people come to Christ in one day. Truly revival at its finest! There’s a beautiful promise in this passage of scripture. After hearing everything that Peter had to say, there were many who were “cut to the heart” and they wanted to know, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37).Then Peter replied in verses 38-39, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” This story inspires the following 4 ways to live in the power of Pentecost every day. Photo Credit: ©GettyImages/sedmak

What Transpired in the 10 Days between Ascension and Pentecost?

The New Testament gives a glorious account of Jesus's ascending into heaven. He rose from the dead at the end of Passover and stayed on earth for forty days before ascending to paradise. Ten days later, the Holy Spirit fell upon the disciples in Jerusalem, another epic event. But what about those ten days? When investigating that period, we realize the importance of how we wait on God. I’ve never prayed for patience, yet God still tries to teach it to me. God often uses seasons of waiting to build our character and faith. We often feel waiting is wasted, but God wastes nothing. He uses these seasons to test and try us and help our faith become more complete.Between Ascension and Pentecost, the disciples obeyed Jesus’ command to wait in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit. They spent those 10 days gathered in prayer, united with other believers, and preparing for the mission Christ had given them. This waiting period ended on Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came and empowered the Church to proclaim the gospel. Let's explore this significant period in more detail. Photo Credit: ©GettyImages/KatarzynaBialasiewicz
